The first season of Marvel’s What If…? asked questions about the MCU and what could happen to the timeline if those questions were answered. The answers that we received provided some episodes that were entertaining in that typical Marvel comedic fashion, but there were also some serious and dark episodes that made us question the morality of the characters. The animation style was beautiful and added an almost storybook element to it.

Moreover, the first season had a fantastic list of cast members and characters throughout. The second season continued with that exact same formula, never missing a beat. Brand-new faces were introduced into the new season, along with some familiar ones. This includes the cast members who voiced the characters. What if….we tell you about the cast and characters that appear throughout the second season of What If…?

Mick Wingert as Iron Man/Tony Stark

Who doesn’t know this genius billionaire playboy philanthropist? The basis of his character is that Tony gets kidnapped by a group of terrorists. He is forced to build a destructive weapon, but instead, he builds a powered suit of armor, so he can escape. Once he does escape, he modifies and rebuilds his suit, becoming the Iron Man we know today who eventually becomes a key member of the Avengers. In this second season of What If…?, when Tony Stark saves New York from the Chitauri invasion by redirecting a nuclear missile towards their mothership, the portal closes behind him. His story continues very similar to that of the Thor: Ragnarok film.

Mick Wingert is more popularly known for his voice roles as Po and Zeng in Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness. But you might recognize his voice in the video game Mass Effect 2 (along with two Kung Fu Panda games) and was even a voice actor in The NoSleep Podcast and The Princess and the Frog. He regularly voices Tony Stark in the animated series Avengers Assemble and has kept that role since. He is also a voice acting coach.

Josh Keaton as Steve Rogers/Hydra Stomper

America’s Ass himself has a different role to play in What If…? season 2. In the main Marvel timeline, Steve Rogers goes through the Super Soldier Serum experiment during World War 2. After he is injected with the Super Soldier serum, he becomes Captain America and turns the tide of war away from Hydra’s favor. He gets frozen in ice and reawakens in the modern era, later on becoming an Avenger and learning the ways of the 21st century. We’ll meet two variants of Steve Rogers: one where he becomes a brainwashed pilot of the Hydra Stomper suit and one in a Renaissance-themed era alternate universe.

Another very talented voice actor, Josh Keaton has made appearances in Marvel projects, such as voicing Spider-Man in The Spectacular Spider-Man. He was also the voice for Electro in the 2018 game Marvel’s Spider-Man and Revolver Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. In the Disney animated film Hercules, he voiced the younger version of the film’s namesake.

Chris Hemsworth as King Thor

The God of Thunder’s variant in season two is the polar opposite of the Party Thor we know from season one. Thor is the son of Odin and brother of Loki, who resides in Asgard. He was arrogant and cocky when he first landed on Earth after he was denounced from his throne, but after meeting Jane and her friends, his character changes, and he becomes more compassionate to humanity. He goes back and forth from Asgard and Earth, eventually joins the Avengers, and ultimately chooses to stay on Earth to live a life with Jane. Thor does become king again in What If…?, but not in the typical Norse mythology way.

In addition to being the God of Thunder (in voice and live-action), Chris Hemsworth’s two most critically acclaimed roles in his acting career are in the comedy horror film Cabin in the Woods and his role of James Hunt in the biographical sports movie Rush. He played the huntsman in a more mature take on the Snow White fairytale in Snow White and the Huntsman and its sequel, The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Before he became a Hollywood actor, he played Kim Hyde in the Australian TV show Home and Away.

Lake Bell as Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff

Natasha Romanoff (also played by Scarlett Johansson) was the heart and soul of the Avengers. She was a skilled assassin and weapons expert who went through harsh training in the Red Room. Though she was targeted by S.H.I.E.L.D., with Clint Barton/Hawkeye assigned to kill her, he gave her a chance to prove herself instead. Later, she became one of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s most efficient agents and a founding member of the Avengers. Natasha assists Peggy Carter in her search for Steve Rogers in this second season.

Lake Bell is not only an actor, but also a screenwriter. She wrote a short film titled Worst Enemy for the Sundance Film Festival back in 2012. It wasn’t until 2013 that her screenwriting debut In a World…. would help her kick off into other projects. For her acting projects, she voices Poison Ivy in the Max series Harley Quinn, starred in the television series Childrens Hospital, Bless this Mess, and starred in movies such as The Secret Life of Pets (and its sequel) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter

Peggy Carter continues from What If…? season one to be Captain Carter, an alternate version of Captain America where she takes the Super Soldier serum. Otherwise, in the MCU timeline, she was a skilled agent of the Strategic Scientific Reserve and the love interest of Steve Rogers. She played a crucial role in the fight against Hydra during World War 2. She would eventually become a founder of SHIELD as well as its Director. In season 2, Captain Carters continues her search for Steve Rogers, and after finding him, gets taken via portal to another universe set way back in the Renaissance era.

This British-American actor was born for the role of Peggy Carter. Hayley Atwell has played and voiced the character since Captain America: The First Avenger, even being the lead in her own show, Agent Carter. She has appeared in Disney live-action fantasy films such as Cinderella (2015) and Christopher Robin (2018). She also has the leading role of Grace in the action film Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, and its sequel coming in 2015. She was nominated for the British Independent Film Award for her role of Lady Elizabeth Foster in 2008’s The Dutchess.

Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch

Wanda just cannot seem to catch a break when it comes to the MCU. In the MCU timeline, she and her twin brother were taken for experimentation after their home was destroyed. Since then, she got powers through the Mind Stone, became an Avenger after learning of Ultron’s plans, accidentally killed innocent people, fell in love with Vision, and had to kill him so Thanos couldn’t take the Mind Stone, only for Thanos to bring him back and kill him before her very eyes. This was all before the events of Wandavision and Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness. However, in What If…? season 2, we’ll see just how she uses a certain power never seen before in her universe, where she is a Merlin-type figure.

Yet another actor born for their Marvel role, Elizabeth Olsen’s portrayal of Wanda throughout the MCU has been nothing but flawless. So much so that her performance in the Disney+ miniseries Wandavision earned her a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. She has been nominated for another Golden Globe for a miniseries outside of Marvel: the 2023 show Love & Death for her role of Candy Montgomery. She’s earned two Critics Choice Awards, and you may have seen her in the 2014 version of Godzilla.
