makes him a fitting choice.
- Although Stallone is done playing Rambo, there may still be a new project that recasts the role with a younger actor to appeal to a new generation.
Sylvester Stallone is unlikely to ever play John Rambo again, but he has an opinion on who should be next to step into the role – Barbie’s very own Ken, Ryan Gosling. Stallone has previously cited Gosling as a great choice to take on the role of Rambo in a reboot of the franchise, and doubled down on the statement while appearing on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show.

Stallone last appeared as Rambo in 2019’s Rambo: Last Blood, calling time on his tenure of the role, but voicing his hope that it is not the last time the franchise is brought to life on screen. The question is, who could possibly step into such an iconic role and make it their own? It seems that, from one Oscar-winning veteran to an Oscar-nominated star in their prime, Stallone feels that Gosling has what it takes – even if he could be a bit too good-looking. Stallone told Fallon:
“I’ll tell you why [I want Ryan Gosling as Rambo]. I met him at a dinner, and obviously we’re opposites. He’s good-looking, I’m not. That’s how it works. No, seriously! Can you imagine me as Ken? Doesn’t work at all. But he goes, ‘I was fascinated by Rambo, and I used to go to school dressed as Rambo, and people would chase me away, and I still didn’t stop…’ He just kept saying that he had a lot of affiliation with Rambo. And I thought, ‘You know, this is interesting. If I ever passed the baton, I’ll pass it on to him, because he loves the character.’ I would say yes [he could play him], but, I don’t know if anyone would say, ‘Hey, he’s too good-looking to be Rambo!'”
Sylvester Stallone is Done as Rambo, But Rambo 6 Could Still Happen
Although Sylvester Stallone has been seemingly stepping back from some of his biggest action roles in the last few years to concentrate on other projects. This saw him drop out of the Creed franchise after Creed II, and mostly hand over the reins of the Expendables franchise in the fourth installment. Although Expend4bles producers Kevin King-Templeton and Les Weldon showed interest in reviving the Rambo franchise for a sixth movie, Stallone previously gave his blunt response to coming back one more time.
Rambo, I could leave him. He’s done pretty much, even though they want to do another one, but what am I fighting? Arthritis?
It seems like Rambo’s return will most likely be in a new project that will attempt to recast the role with a younger actor and essentially start the war veteran’s stories all over again for a new generation. Could Ryan Gosling be the next actor to play the role? That is something we will just have to wait and see, but stranger things have certainly happened.
