20 Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde (2003)

It’s only natural to follow up Legally Blonde with its sequel, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde. After Elle has proven to her ex-boyfriend that she deserves so much better than him, she gets engaged to her colleague (Luke Wilson), and finds herself advocating for a new bill to pass in Washington, D.C. Once again, Elle faces several obstacles as few people take her seriously, but after proving herself and refusing to back down, powerful individuals take notice and help her achieve her goals.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

Obviously, we are following the same ambitious young woman around in this sequel, but instead of trying to prove herself in law school, she is taking the bull by the horns in the capitol. Despite the blonde jokes and judgmental people, Elle is still persistent in her goals, and with a bit of flair and pink pumps, she is able to show everyone just what women can do. Stream on Max

Alicia Silverstone was iconic in her role as Cher Horowitz in Clueless, a fashionable and uppity blonde teen who goes from being so painfully unaware of her surroundings to a decent and helpful young woman. While trying to do good deeds by helping her teachers get together and giving the new girl in school a makeover, Cher learns that the people who really matter in her life care more about the beauty inside a person’s heart rather than their outer appearance.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

Cher is yet another blonde who is not taken very seriously by others. However, much like Elle Woods, when Cher puts her mind to something, there is absolutely no stopping her. Both Witherspoon and Silverstone were nominated for the MTV Movie Award for Best Actress in their films, but only Silverstone came out with a win. Stream on Paramount+

17 The House Bunny (2008)

The House Bunny

Release Date

Director
Fred Wolf

Rating
PG-13

From the same writers that brought us Legally Blonde comes a new tale (or should we say “tail”) of a young blonde woman who must figure out what she wants to do in life after getting the boot from the Playboy Mansion. In The House Bunny, Anna Faris plays a ditsy former Playmate, Shelley Darlingson, who just so happens to have a heart of gold. She finds herself becoming the new housemother to a ragtag sorority, and through a lot of lessons and heart to hearts, the women all overcome challenges and stereotypes.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

Shelley and Elle would be the absolute best of friends. They would bond over fashion, interior decorating, the color pink, and, most importantly, how each one had to face horrible people who doubted them. Both characters are kind, caring, and considerate of others, and it is refreshing to see the pretty blonde not be the mean girl in a film. Stream on Netflix

16 Mean Girls (2004)

Mean Girls is iconic, fun, and the ultimate movie to watch when you need to be reminded of just how crazy high school can be when certain cliques rule the school. Lindsay Lohan stars as the new girl, Cady, and after making friends with the most popular girls in school, she quickly turns into a clone of them. Mini-skirts, finding the perfect lip gloss, and talking to boys become priorities. However, the former queen bee does not appreciate being dethroned, and all hell breaks loose.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

Many women screenwriters certainly know how to create complex women characters, and for that, women in the audience are forever grateful. Just as Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith perfectly fabricated Elle Woods, Tina Fey was able to create Cady, the Plastics, and her very own character, Miss Norbury. While Elle and Cady are respectfully two very different individuals, they both have a certain depth that they bring to the screen. Stream on Paramount+

15 Uptown Girls (2003)

Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning were an iconic duo in Uptown Girls. Murphy played a go-with-the-flow young woman named Molly who, thanks to her late father, has been a part of the music scene all her life. However, her life gets turned upside down when she learns her inheritance is gone, and she then begins a job as a nanny for Ray (Fanning), an overly cautious child who believes structure is fun. The two are total opposites, but after some time together, they realize they desperately needed a friend like the other.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

Elle and Molly both come from lavish lifestyles, but when Molly’s financial situation hits rock bottom, she has to pull herself together fairly quickly and figure out how to navigate her new situation. Both characters have hidden talents in the fashion industry — Elle is a genius at knowing clothes, brands, and styles with just a simple glance, and Molly proves she is a great designer — that ultimately helps them move forward in their chosen careers. How It’s Like Legally Blonde

The overall message of both Legally Blonde and I Feel Pretty is that people, especially women, should be confident in their own skin. Unfortunately, this comes with sacrifice.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

When it comes to breaking the status quo, Andy is right up there with Elle. However, her inexperience with such a grueling hike leads to plenty of complications, but in the end, the blood, sweat, and tears are all worth it.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

While not a fun romantic comedy, Wild has more in common with Legally Blonde than initially meets the eye. Aside from Witherspoon starring in both, Wild tells the tale of a woman who is feeling lost, but is still determined to prove to herself and everyone else that she can accomplish seemingly impossible things. How It’s Like Legally Blonde

Both Elle and Erin believe in doing the right thing, even when that means making their superiors angry or digging deeper into what they believe is a lead. The real-life Erin Brockovich and Amanda Brown (who inspired the character Elle) are headstrong and inspirational women, and they deserve to have their stories told. Rent on DIRECTV

8 Legally Blondes (2009)

Two blonde girls stand beside their father in a pink room
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

In Legally Blondes, Elle Wood’s love of pink and need to change things up is passed down to her British cousins, Izzie and Annie, as they move to California to stay with her and go to school. With the twins as the new girls in their high school, some students naturally see them as competition and set out to destroy their reputation. However, the girls are not afraid to prove their innocence and plead their case when it comes to false accusations.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

Legally Blondes is a cute spin-off of Legally Blonde as it shows the next generation is just as fierce about having their voices heard and not being judged based on appearances or personal preferences. Witherspoon served as executive producer on this film, so fans can rest assured that Milly and Becky Russo did Elle Woods’ legacy justice. Stream on Max

Tracy goes out for the student government president, but a resentful teacher, believing Tracy tends to get an unfair upper hand, does his best to sabotage her.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

Instead of playing the kind-hearted and honest young woman, Witherspoon plays a girl who will do anything to help herself climb the ranks, whether that be in a simple student government or in the real world. Both Elle Woods and Tracy Flick believe they can succeed and change policies, but Elle would be heartbroken to know how Tracy tends to do things to ensure she always comes out on top.

Will Gluck

Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) in Easy A is intelligent, funny, and witty, and she has a great relationship with her parents. Overall, she’s quite the catch. However, Olive tells a little white lie about losing her virginity. Shortly after, rumors begin spreading, and she is labeled a “dirty skank.” Not wanting to confess, Olive goes along with the rumors, and she even kicks it up a notch by comparing herself to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Hester Pryne. This facade eventually comes to an end when Olive becomes overwhelmed by the attention and lies.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

Stone and Witherspoon are both wonderfully talented: they make audiences fall in love with them, and they can make people laugh until they cry as they deliver some of the most iconic lines. Their respective characters are both smart and creative women who stick to their guns and don’t let others’ opinions bother them. Stream on DIRECTV

5 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

In 10 Things I Hate About You, Julia Stiles stars as the angsty teenager named Kat Stratford who is a feminist, a man-eater, and does not put up with any nonsense from anyone. She essentially meets her match when she is introduced to Patrick (Heath Ledger), a senior with his own scary reputation. However, his intentions are not so honorable until he realizes that he is in love with the school’s angriest girl.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

While Elle Woods is a bit nicer when it comes to facing criticism and those who don’t exactly agree with her, Kat Stratford is intimidating and bluntly straightforward in presenting her opinions. Both women should be looked up to as they manage to get what they want, and they don’t let the opinions of others (especially men) get them down. Stream on Prime Video and Disney+

4 The Prince and Me (2004)

Stiles is clearly great in roles where she gets to be a bit mean to guys and put them in their place. In The Prince & Me, she plays Paige Morgan, an ambitious college student who is determined to succeed in the medical field. When she meets Eddie, an undercover prince, she immediately dislikes him due to his views on college girls in America. However, as all rom-coms go, the two eventually bond and fall in love. Unlike the traditional storyline, their tale does not end in the expected happily-ever-after.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

While both Elle and Paige manage to find love in college, they do not allow their new romances to stop them from pursuing their dreams. Elle goes on to work in politics, while Paige still pursues her medical degree, so she can eventually work in less fortunate countries. Both of their romantic interests are understanding enough to know that the women’s priorities are exactly where they need to be. Stream on Max

3 13 Going on 30 (2004)

After making a wish (paired with a little magical glitter) on her 13th birthday, Jenna Rink finds herself grown up and thriving, hence the title 13 Going on 30. There are just a couple little problems: she is no longer friends with her childhood best friend, and she is backstabbing her own coworkers. Realizing this is not who she wants to be, Jenna does everything she can to make things right, even though not everything goes her way.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

Both Garner and Witherspoon’s characters have hearts of gold. Elle may look the part of the typical mean girl, and Jenna may have become a mean girl for 17 years, but when they are both committed to making significant changes happen, absolutely no one can stand in their way. Stream on Netflix

2 Mona Lisa Smile (2003)

Even in the 1950s, Mona Lisa Smile‘s Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts) was a forward-thinking feminist, who believed a woman was capable of so much more than being someone’s wife and mother. An outstanding teacher, she challenged her all-women class to think for themselves about art, their livelihoods, and what they truly wanted to do with their futures. Though the administration and even some students felt differently, Katherine was able to stir up original ideas.

How It’s Like Legally Blonde

Elle and Katherine would be proud of what the other has accomplished. Katherine was in a position to help impressionable young women learn to think for themselves rather than say what they believe an authority figure wants to hear. Then, 50 years later, Elle is rocking everyone’s world by breaking stereotypes and forcing people to listen to the opinion of the woman in the hot pink suit. Stream on Hulu
