Matthew Perry’s Cause of Death Revealed in Toxicology Report

  • In a recent report, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Matthew Perry’s death was caused by the acute effects of ketamine.
  • The report stated that the ketamine in Perry’s body at the time of his death was not likely from a recent ketamine infusion therapy, as the drug’s half-life is short. It concluded that the ketamine led to cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression.
  • Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy for a while, but his doctor had reduced the frequency of treatments six months before his death. Jennifer Aniston shared that Perry was in a happy place and not in pain, contradicting speculations about his mental state.

Matthew Perry’s death earlier this year was seen as a shocking tragedy, and was ruled as accidental drowning after the actor was discovered at home, dead in his pool. Today, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office released the toxicology report on Perry’s death, and acknowledged that the actor died from “the acute effects of ketamine.”

As per TMZ, the report concluded that the actor had taken a dose of ketamine infusion therapy to combat his depression just over a week before his death, but that the ketamine in his body at the time of his death was not likely to be from that infusion, as the drug’s “half-life is 3 to 4 hours, or less.” The medical examiner said that the ketamine was responsible for causing cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression. However, there were no other drugs and no alcohol found. Additional contributing factors to the actor’s death were listed as drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine effects.

The report goes on to add that Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy for a long time, but 6 months before his death, Perry’s doctor decided that he did not need to have the treatment on an every-other-day basis.

The report comes just days after Perry’s Friends costar Jennifer Aniston revealed that she shared text messages with Perry on the morning of his death, and revealed that he was in a very happy place at that time.

When Matthew Perry passed in October, there was a period of shock amongst his fans and within Hollywood. This was very true of his Friends costars, who took their time in being able to put into words how his death impacted each of them.

Earlier this week, Jennifer Aniston once again remembered Perry, and shared that she was in touch with him on the morning of his death. While there had been plenty of speculation about Perry’s state of mind in the days leading up to his passing, Aniston put to bed any idea that he was in a bad place that day. She said in an interview with Variety:

“As he said he’d love to be remembered. He was happy. He was healthy. He had quit smoking. He was getting in shape. He was happy — that’s all I know. I was literally texting with him that morning, funny Matty. He was not in pain. He wasn’t struggling. He was happy. I want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy. He was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. He really was dealt a tough one. I miss him dearly. We all do. Boy, he made us laugh really hard.”
