Hollywood and comedic icon Jim Carrey will return as Dr. Robotnik in the upcoming video game sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it has been confirmed. According to Variety, we have not seen the last of the gloriously mustachioed supervillain, with Carrey now all set to reprise the role of the mad scientist. News that should further excite fans of the little super-speedy hedgehog that could.

Carrey first played the role of Dr. Robotnik, aka Doctor Eggman, in the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie back in 2020. Though it took the entire first outing for Carrey to sport the same bald head and mustache look as his pixel counterpart. Directed by Jeff Fowler in his feature directorial debut, the first Sonic the Hedgehog introduces audiences to the Sega icon, who is thrown into the human world and must team up with a town sheriff, Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), to thwart Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik.

The final moments of the first movie see Robotnik banished thanks to Sonic’s use of a warp ring portal, which sends him to the mushroom planet. Going even more mad due to isolation (with nothing but mushrooms for company), this is when he decides to shave his head and grows his mustache out, thus becoming the Dr. Robotnik that fans know and love.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees Robotnik joining forces with Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba), with the final moments finding Robotnik missing. Clearly, he will be found in Sonic 3.
