Godzilla Minus One Reaches New Heights on Rotten Tomatoes, Smashing Franchise’s Record Audience Score

Author

Summary

  • Godzilla Minus One now boasts the franchise’s highest audience score on Rotten Tomatoes at 98%.
  • Critics have also given Minus One a 97% Tomatometer rating, but it still trails the perfect 100% Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995) currently registers.
  • Despite its high scores, Minus One still has a long way to go before it can surpass the box office success of director Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla (2014), which earned $525 million worldwide.

Gojira continues its onslaught and reaches a brand-new, crowning achievement. The King of the Monsters is obliterating more than just Japan these days, as the latest installment in the 69-year-old franchise, Godzilla Minus One, has wiped out yet another record. And this time, it’s a personal best for the film series. Godzilla Minus One now boasts the best Rotten Tomatoes audience score of any movie featuring the killer kaiju.

Godzilla Minus One registers an audience score of 98%, at the time of this writing, which flattens the old record of 94% held by 1995’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. However, Godzilla vs. Destoroyah still has the advantage over Minus One when it comes to the ole Tomatometer. For now, critics have awarded Minus One a 97% rating, while Godzilla vs. Destoroyah still leads the franchise with a perfect 100%.

That 100% Tomatometer score should have an asterisk next to it, though, because only six reviews have been filed for Godzilla vs. Destoroyah on Rotten Tomatoes, while Minus One has 111 reviews posted, at the time this story was published.

In 2024, Gojira will celebrate its 70th anniversary, and Legendary’s MonsterVerse will expand even further with the addition of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. And, today, Godzilla mania is already at an all-time high, even before the seven-decade celebration begins. In addition to the record-breaking Godzilla Minus One making waves, the Apple+ TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters continues to whet kaiju fans’ appetites with new episodes every Friday.

But Godzilla Minus One represents the franchise worldwide with more than just high Rotten Tomato scores. Audiences coming right out of theaters have given Minus One an “A” CinemaScore, which matches the “A” the MonsterVerse’s Godzilla vs. Kong received in 2021. And that is also a record for the decades-old film series, which is shared by these two terrific movies, in terms of highest CinemaScore awarded to a Godzilla installment.

However, Minus One still has a long way to go if it wants to match or surpass the overall box office numbers of the most successful cinematic entries in the series. In the modern-era, since the release of 1998’s Godzilla, director Gareth Edwards’ 2014 film of the same name has made the most noise worldwide in cinemas. The first installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse amassed an eye-popping $525 million, so Minus One remains in pursuit of Godzilla’s more momentous monetary records.
