Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Director Teases “Multiple” Versions of Godzilla

  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
will feature multiple versions of Godzilla, showcasing his evolution and training routine.
  • The upcoming movie aims to deliver big, loud, and action-packed battles, catering to fans who crave colossal monster fights.
  • The film will bring together Godzilla and Kong as a buddy-cop team, facing a new and larger threat that endangers both their worlds and humanity.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set to bring a big, loud and action-packed MonsterVerse story to cinemas next month, and director Adam Wingard has teased that fans will get to see “multiple” versions of everyone’s favorite Kaiju in the latest team-up between the two Titans.

The new addition to the MonsterVerse will not be the kind of homegrown, grounded movie that Toho’s Godzilla Minus One delivered to great acclaim, but is tooled specifically to those who want to see a continuation of the colossal battles that have come to be expected from the franchise. After the titanic duo of Godzilla and Kong reached a territorial understanding in Godzilla vs. Kong, they now face a new challenge that necessitates their need to become the MonsterVerse’s answer to a buddy-cop team, ready to take on a new, bigger threat to both their world and that of the humans they frequently come into contact with.

During a recent conversation with Empire, Wingard shared a little more detail about what fans will get from his latest venture in the franchise, which it seems will include a lot of change for Japan’s biggest export. Touching on the new “pink” Godzilla seen in the trailers, he said:

“This is his version of a training routine. I’m really big into Shaw Brothers martial arts. Those films are always about, ‘Here’s a big threat, and you have to do all these things to pump yourself up so that you can take on that threat.’ You’re gonna see lots of different versions of Godzilla in this movie.”

While fans shouldn’t take this to mean that the franchise is about to go all multiversal and start introducing other physical Godzillas, it seems that we will see Godzilla essentially pumping himself up to be more than in his previous MonsterVerse appearances.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire Can Build On The MonsterVerse’s Popularity

Warner Bros. Pictures

As Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire gears up to kickstart a new phase in the MonsterVerse, the game is clearly ready to up the ante from Godzilla vs Kong. While, for some, this will result in a big, dumb movie that falls into the same category of loud, CGI-laden spectacle as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is always an appetite for more Godzilla and Kong stories.

This was proven recently with Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which debuted in 2023 with a more human-orientated story set within the MonsterVerse’s existing timeline. Having explained some of the physics around the existence of the Hollow Earth and the Titans, the series acted as a bridge between several previous movies in the franchise, but also avoided overusing its central creatures – mostly due to its TV budget – allowing them to come back to the fore in this year’s movie.
