Count on the Russo Brothers to mix action and comedy flawlessly in a film. The Gray Man, starring Gosling as Six, Chris Evans as Lloyd Hansen, and Ana de Armas as Dani Miranda, is an action thriller that came out in 2022. The film follows the collision between a valuable CIA asset and agent “Sierra Six” against an ex-CIA agent named Lloyd Hansen ,who threatens to unmask the agency’s deepest and darkest secrets.

What Makes It Great

If you are at all familiar with the Russo Brothers’ work in the MCU, you know that comedy and action are genres that mesh well together when done right. In The Gray Man, Gosling utilizes his natural ability to charm audiences to his advantage. Humor is peppered throughout his arc, and there’s a certain level of silliness juxtaposed with the bloodshed and intense action sequences. This might be a surprising comedic performance from Gosling, but not one to look over, especially considering a sequel is being written. Stream on Netflix

5 The Big Short (2015)

Big Short

Release Date

Rating
R

Consider this the sign you need to finally watch The Big Short. This Adam McKay film is a comedy-drama that follows a collapse in the American economy and a group of men who are hellbent on making a fortune from it. The world of finance and the housing market may not seem like the most obvious place for an enthralling plot, but The Big Short has all the drama and comedy you could need to enjoy yourself from start to finish.

What Makes It Great

This film’s cast is the biggest reason why it is such a great watch. We have comedy genius Steve Carell as Mark Baum and Gosling as Jared Vennett, going head-to-head. Also featured in this star-studded film are Christian Bale as Michael Burry, Brad Pitt as Ben Rickert, and Marisa Tomei as Cynthia Baum. This entire cast has exceptional chemistry, and all have some of the best (and underrated) comedic reputations in cinema altogether. Stream on Paramount+

4 Lars and the Real Girl (2007)

In Lars and the Real Girl, we have Gosling as Lars, who isn’t known to be the most sociable person out there. However, Lars’ friends and family are overjoyed to hear that he has finally got himself a girlfriend that he met online, and are eager to see him find love. As it turns out out, this girlfriend happens to be a life-sized plastic doll. Though this may normally call for intervention, Lars’ family chooses to respect this new connection, effectively playing along with him.

What Makes It Great

Lars and the Real Girl offers a different kind of funny performance from Gosling. This film highlights how people who suffer from mental illness can oftentimes be misunderstood or have their feelings pushed to the side in order to fit what others see as “right” or “normal.” As much as Gosling executes the emotional demands of this kind of role, he is foremost incredibly funny and charismatic throughout. Lars and the Real Girl ultimately strikes the perfect balance between light-hearted charm and serious subject matter. Stream on YouTube

3 Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)

Crazy Stupid Love
Crazy Stupid Love

Release Date
July 29, 2011

Director
Glenn Ficarra , John Requa

Rating
PG-13

An actor like Gosling was made for the romance genre, as evidenced by films like The Notebook and La La Land. However, being in love and being funny is much harder to pull off. In this vein, Crazy, Stupid, Love is a definite must-watch, as it follows Jacob Palmer (Gosling) taking on the daunting task of getting a middle-aged, though newly single, Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) back into the world of modern dating.

What Makes It Great

With the iconic comedic duo of Gosling and Carell leading the charge, and the magic of having Emma Stone and Gosling playing love interests (the first of many), what more could you want? Gosling is full of charm and charisma in this film, walking the tightrope of cool and confident without coming across as chauvinistic. Stream on Hulu

2 The Nice Guys (2016)

The Nice Guys is an action-comedy film that came out in 2016. The film takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, and follows the partnership between private eye Holland March (Gosling) and Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe). When a woman named Amelia (Margaret Qualley) goes missing, the two take it upon themselves to lead an investigation to find her. As they delve further into the ins and outs surrounding her disappearance, they realize that they have signed up for more than they once thought.

What Makes It Great

The Nice Guys was well-received in the eyes of critics, receiving a 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Gosling is a stand-out comedian in this duo and gives us a funny performance that would essentially define the trajectory of his career. Indeed, The Nice Guys directly followed The Big Short, both of which came after a string of heavy dramas in Gosling’s career, from Drive to The Place Beyond the Pines to Only God Forgives. Proving that he was more than just a dramatic actor, Gosling, from here, would go on to do La La Land and, eventually, Barbie. Stream on Netflix

1 Barbie (2023)

Gosling is a bonafide scene-stealer in Barbie. In Gerwig’s phenomenon of a movie, audiences are dropped right in the middle of Barbieland, where all the Barbies live their picture-perfect, pink, plastic lives — and the Kens are also there. However, when Barbie (Margot Robbie) finds herself losing her spark, she ventures into the real world to find out what is causing her imbalances and curiosity about her identity beyond being a Barbie. And, again, Ken (Gosling) is also there.

What Makes It Great

Beyond being a technical achievement on all fronts, from production design to soundtrack, Barbie highlights the plight of being a woman. Women in society today are expected to be anything and everything, and their sense of self-worth and individuality are firmly put on the back-burner for the “betterment of society.”

Amongst all this and a breathtaking performance by Robbie, we have Gosling at the peak of his comedic career. Fully embracing the satirical representation of men in society in his role as Ken, he sent us to fits of uncontrollable laughter. His performance was lighthearted, completely ridiculous, the perfect level of overdramatic, and just outright fun — take, for example, his “I’m Just Ken” dance sequence below. If there was any performance in his filmography that showcased the best of his comedic abilities, Barbie is the go-to. Rent on AppleTV
