Deadpool & Wolverine: Is the Film a Multiverse Movie?

Not much is known at this time about Deadpool & Wolverine’s plot. Despite a heavily anticipated Super Bowl spot that shed light on some elements, far more questions than answers arose. While most of the cast from the previous two films are returning, and it has been confirmed for a while that Hugh Jackman would return as Wolverine, the plot of the movie, for the most part, remains a mystery. It was not until the trailer that fans knew the title, as it had been previously referred to as Deadpool 3 by most outlets. What is known for sure is that Deadpool & Wolverine is definitely going to be a multiverse movie. Except, this multiverse is more than just one interconnected comic book movie.

Deadpool & Wolverine’s set photos and trailer showed the character in a wasteland with a notable 20th Century Fox logo crumbled in the background, a reference to the fact that Disney purchased 20th Century Fox and renamed it 20th Century Pictures, with the previous Fox X-Men movie continuity ending. If this is going to be the multiverse movie it looks to be, what can be expected in the film?

Updated February 13, 2024: With the release of Deadpool & Wolverine‘s first trailer, this article has been updated with new information.

Trouble with the TVA

Deadpool 2‘s post-credit scene saw Wade repair Cable’s time-travel watch and use it to change the course of history in some personal and hilarious ways. From saving his fiancé Vanessa and possibly preventing the movie from even taking place at all to preventing the real-life Ryan Reynolds from ever making 2011’s Green Lantern, time was altered in some pretty drastic ways. It was intended to be a funny gag to set things back to the status quo before a potential third movie, but now it’s coming back in a big way as the Time Variance Authority has come for Deadpool.

Introduced in Loki, The Time Variance Authority, or TVA for short, is a multiversal police force tasked with guarding the sacred timeline. They were originally created by He Who Remains, a variant of Kang the Conqueror, to destroy branching timelines, but season two of Loki saw the organization undergo a major change after Loki revealed their true origin. Now, the organization has been reformed by characters like Mobius (Owen Wilson), Hunter B-15 (Wunmi Mosaku), and Casey (Eugene Cordero), reformatted the TVA to be an organization that looks to perceive the new branching timelines of the multiverse. They are now doing the very act they were originally created to stop.

After Loki‘s second season wrapped up, the future of the TVA was left uncertain. With Loki taking his seat at the end of time to ensure free will, it seemed like their purpose now was to prevent any Kang variants from causing another multiversal war. Now, it seems that Deadpool’s crimes against time have gone too far, and they now have to step in and arrest him for all the damage he’s caused. While Deadpool may have lost his old life, the TVA has offered him a new one as a hero.

Using his abilities for good, Deadpool would be able to assist the TVA in whatever is disrupting the multiverse this week, with that most likely being the villain Cassandra Nova. Using the TVA as a way to integrate Deadpool into the MCU continuity naturally is a smart decision, as it keeps the same character that fans love, all while making a Deadpool movie more meta than ever. With the TVA by his side, he’ll be able to travel through the multiverse for better or, potentially, for worse. The trailer shows scenes of Deadpool fighting off TVA agents, so it’s possible that at one point, he goes rogue in this multiversal mission.

Returning X-Men Characters

The first trailer is, expectedly, low on plot details, but there are some huge teases hidden throughout. Perhaps the most interesting appearance is that of Pyro. Aaron Stanford played the character in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand and is returning here in Deadpool & Wolverine. He may not be one of the biggest characters from those original X-Men movies, but if Marvel is willing to spoil his appearance in the movie, then there must be many more surprises to come. It’s likely that along with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, more X-Men characters could appear in this movie.

There have been set photos of other characters from the previous X-Men films that we won’t spoil, but it is clear that Deadpool & Wolverine looks to bring back a lot of fan favorites to give the original 20th Century Fox Marvel movies a proper goodbye. This is clear because one character that has been confirmed is not from the X-Men films but another 20th Century Fox movie series. Jennifer Garner’s Elektra is confirmed to return in the film.

Garner previously played the role of Elektra in both 2003’s Daredevil and the 2005 spin-off film Elektra. Garner’s ex-husband, Ben Affleck, is also rumored to be appearing in the movie, reprising his role as Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil. Since those two films were never connected to the X-Men films, it seems to be that various past incarnations of past Marvel characters done by Fox are all being pulled into this adventure.

This is all a thinly veiled metaphor for the fact that Fox’s X-Men are now owned by Disney and that universe was quickly discarded as the MCU soon planned to introduce their own version. Representing that by having the universe itself actually be destroyed and cast into disarray is not only very funny but the perfect kind of meta-story for a Deadpool movie. Before the character properly joins the MCU, it’s nice to see these characters get one last hurrah before the reboot.

Future MCU Implications

Deadpool & Wolverine looks to be the most important MCU movie post Avengers: Endgame as it paves the way towards Avengers 5 and Secret Wars. This is the first movie to take place entirely outside the normal Sacred Timeline with characters who weren’t created in the MCU. The Multiverse Saga is in full effect in this film, as Deadpool is making the jump over to this universe. Marvel is making this a multiverse movie to help build towards their two big events, all while simultaneously bringing Deadpool over to the main universe. This big grand sendoff to the Fox X-Men universe will raise the stakes as it shows what happens to a universe after its destruction.

For all of its faults, there wouldn’t be an MCU today without the success of the X-Men movies. Some of them were genuinely great, and the universe deserves a better sendoff than the forgotten New Mutants. Deadpool & Wolverine can be a proper goodbye to one franchise while also an important part in setting up concepts that’ll be in play during Secret Wars and even potentially setting up its lead characters to play a pivotal role in the movie. On the topic of Secret Wars, in one of the trailer shots, there is an actual comic from the 2015 Secret Wars event lying on the ground.

With every detail in this trailer carefully crafted, there’s no doubt that this wasn’t intentional. The largest event in all of Marvel Comics, the Secret Wars story focuses on a multiverse collapsing in on itself due to “incursions”. The survivors of the death of the multiverse take refuge in a place called Battleworld as they look to rebuild the universe they lost. These incursions were introduced to the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the first one took place in The Marvels last year. While audiences have been told about incursions before, now they will get to witness one happen, and doing it to a franchise like the Fox X-Men movies that audiences spent over two decades following and caring for will have a great deal of impact that will raise the stakes.

It’s clear that the MCU is building towards the event, and it’s possible that this comic is an indication that Deadpool and even Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine could have an important role in that movie. It’s been long theorized and rumored that the MCU’s Secret Wars would bring back as many heroes pre-MCU as they could, and at the forefront could be these two as they fight to restore the MCU as we know it.

Deadpool & Wolverine promises to be a superhero film and multiverse movie unlike any other. With Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine, the film could have limitless cameo possibilities. Those cameos could be in service of the story while also providing some fun comedic pairings audiences might not have expected. The film even has the potential to reboot the entire X-Men universe. Saying that the film will go “out with the old” and “in with the new” is an understatement. Deadpool & Wolverine could be the biggest movie of 2024.

Deadpool & Wolverine opens in theaters on July 26, 2024. Check out the trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine below!
