Academy Award nominee Cillian Murphy has stated that he would “be there” if he is called upon to once again don a flat cap as head of the Peaky Blinders, Tommy Shelby, in the upcoming movie. Speaking with BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, Murphy declared his faith in creator and writer Stephen Knight, saying “let’s do it,” should audiences want to see a 50-year-old version of the gang leader.
“If there is more story to tell, and if Stephen Knight delivers a script like I know he can, then I will be there. I mean, if we want to watch 50-year-old Tommy Shelby, I will be there. Let’s do it.”
Debuting back in 2013, Peaky Blinders follows Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, the dangerous leader of the Peaky Blinders, a criminal gang based in Birmingham in 1919. The series came to an end with its sixth season in 2022, which sees Tommy riding off into the sunset, likely into a new life, with the world believing him dead.
Peaky Blinders: 8 Things We Want to See in the Movie
As we wait for the Peaky Blinders sequel film that will end the story, here are some of the things we wish to see in it.
It is currently unknown whether Tommy Shelby will factor into the Peaky Blinders movie, but no doubt fans would have no problem at all seeing a 50-year-old (Murphy is currently 47) Tommy coming back into the fray. As for the development of the Peaky Blinders movie, Knight revealed last month that the project will film this year.
“I’m just working on the final bits of it at the moment. I just sit down at the keyboard and start. It’s a bit like having a dream, for me. You sit there and all this stuff comes, and then you read it back and think, ‘That’s pretty good – but where did it come from?’ The plan is to start shooting that in the middle of next year.”
Cillian Murphy Is up for Best Actor at This Year’s Academy Awards
As for Cillian Murphy, he is now an Academy Award nominee thanks to his critically acclaimed lead performance in last year’s Oppenheimer. Starring as the American theoretical physicist credited with being the “father of the atomic bomb,” J. Robert Oppenheimer, Murphy has now been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor alongside the likes of Bradley Cooper for Maestro, Colman Domingo for Rustin, Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers, and Jeffrey Wright for American Fiction.
Written, directed and co-produced by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is by far the biggest hit of Murphy’s career. The movie was met with rave reviews upon release and, thanks to the cultural phenomenon that was “Barbenheimer,” has amassed a monumental $959 million plus at the worldwide box office. So, should Murphy return for the Peaky Blinders movie, his name will already have the words “Academy Award Nominee” before it, and could even have “Academy Award Winner.”
The Peaky Blinders movie has been in the works for some time now, with Knight revealing back in 2020 that it would stand in place of a seventh season. While details regarding the plot and which characters will be involved remain under wraps, Knight has teased the scope, comparing it to none other than 007 himself.
