Black Panther Animated Series Eyes of Wakanda Now in Development

  • Marvel is developing an animated series called Eyes of Wakanda, focusing on Wakandan warriors traveling the world to retrieve vibranium artifacts.
  • Eyes of Wakanda will be released on Disney+ in 2024, along with X-Men ’97 and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
  • A third Black Panther movie has not been announced yet, as the producers want to see how audiences receive the second film before moving forward.

Marvel is now developing an animated series based on the world of Black Panther. Titled Eyes of Wakanda, this newest MCU project was confirmed during an event in which footage from the second season of What If…? was shown, as well as first looks at both upcoming animated shows X-Men ’97 and Spider-Man: Freshman Year, which has now been retitled Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. While not much else has yet been revealed regarding what Eyes of Wakanda will involve, an official description has been released, teasing the focus of the animated show.

“Throughout Wakandan history, brave warriors have been tasked to travel the world retrieving dangerous vibranium artifacts. This is their story.”

Eyes of Wakanda is expected to be released on Disney+ some time in 2024 alongside both X-Men ’97, a revival of 1990s X-Men: The Animated Series, and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which will follow Peter Parker as he gets ready for his High School orientation.

After being introduced in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, the late, great Chadwick Boseman returned as T’Challa, aka Black Panther in the first solo outing for the character in 2018. The MCU outing saw huge success both critically and financially, grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide and breaking numerous box office records, becoming the highest-grossing film directed by a Black filmmaker and the ninth-highest-grossing film at the time of its release.

A sequel was released in 2022 following the tragic death of Boseman, with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever following the leaders of Wakanda as they fight to protect their nation in the wake of King T’Challa’s death. The follow-up was once again well-received critically, as well as grossing $859.2 million at the worldwide box office.

Are We Getting Black Panther 3?

Despite the success of both Black Panther movies, a third outing has yet to be announced. Producer Nate Moore previously explained why this is, revealing that ideas are being “floated around.”

“That’s a great question. To be honest, this is not me trying to not answer the question. We really want to see how audiences receive the film, and I think Ryan’s really interested to see how the film plays before we decide. There are certainly ideas we’ve floated around of what a third film could be if we get to make it. But until the movie comes out, we’re a bit superstitious in that way. We don’t want to count our chickens, because you never know what’s going to happen.”

As for the return of the animated anthology series What If…?, the show is due to debut on the streaming platform Disney+ on December 22, 2023, as part of Phase Five. The series will consist of nine episodes, with the first adventure being “What If… Nebula Joined the Nova Corps?” Further episodes will tell the multiversal tales “What If Happy Hogan Saved Christmas?” and “What If… Captain Carter Fought the Hydra Stomper?
